The inaugural two-day Sadomba Soccer Tournament will roar to life today at Chikurubi Training Depot.
Nine teams from Mashonaland Region’s correctional facilities will lock horns in the prestigious tournament.The tournament will also be used as a platform to select a team for the region that will represent the country at the Africa-Prisons and Corrections Day Celebrations.
Regional public relations officer, Solomon Mundima, said the tournament had come at the right time.
“The Sadomba Tournament came at a really good time as we are getting ready to commemorate the Africa-Prisons and Corrections Day Celebrations. The tournament will give us a chance to really see the players in action and be able to pick the cream of Mashonaland region, a formidable select soccer team to represent the region at the regional competitions,” said Mundima.
Mundima also hailed Sadomba for his sponsorship of the tourney.
“The soccer tournament is the brainchild of former Dynamos, Harare United and national team player Edward Sadomba who, although now based abroad, still remains rooted in the development of soccer in the country.
“Through his foundation, he approached ZPC’s Mashonaland Region through OIC Chikurubi Farm Prison and expressed an intention to host the Sadomba Soccer Tournament comprising of nine Correctional facilities falling under namely Chikurubi Farm Prison, Harare Central Prison, Chinhoyi Prison, Karoi, Kadoma Security Medium Prison, Hurungwe Farm Prison, Mazowe Farm Prison and Bindura Farm Prison.
“He has also provided all the soccer kits, food, transport, awards and prizes for all competing teams and also pledged to continue sponsoring the tournament so that it becomes an annual event,” said Mundima.
