Safety concerns mount as activist’s family fears for their lives

News writer

Primrose Qiniso Bhebe, a dedicated member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), and her daughter Gabrielle Bhebe, find themselves living in constant fear due to their involvement in political activism. The family’s concerns have escalated following the disappearance of Bhebe’s close friend Yvonne Moyo and the tragic death of activist Mboneni Ncube in recent rallies.

Having actively participated in several CCC rallies and events, Bhebe’s family is increasingly worried about their safety. They suspect that the authorities may be targeting them, with fears of potential harm and even sexual violence.

Bhebe’s councillor in Magwegwe, Bulawayo, Concillia Mlalazi who has been closely involved with her political activities, shed light on the concerning situation.

The councillor disclosed that Bhebe had confided in her about the mounting threats and attacks faced by the family due to her political engagement.

“Primrose has expressed her fears for both herself and her daughter Gabrielle as their family home has come under attack multiple times due to her political activism. It is a distressing situation that has left them living in constant anxiety.”

The incident that sparked the family’s heightened concerns was the mysterious disappearance of Yvonne Moyo, a fellow activist and close friend of Bhebe. Moyo vanished after attending one of the CCC rallies alongside Bhebe. Her whereabouts remain unknown, leaving the community deeply troubled and fearing the worst.

Shortly after, Bhebe traveled to Kwekwe to attend another rally, where she witnessed the shocking killing of activist Mboneni Ncube, allegedly by individuals linked to the ruling Zanu-PF party. These incidents have undoubtedly shaken the Bhebe family, fueling their anxieties about their own safety and wellbeing.

The family firmly believes that there may be a direct threat to Bhebe, linking the attacks on their home and the disappearances of fellow activists to her political activities. They have urged the relevant authorities to provide them with protection and ensure a thorough investigation into these alarming incidents.

Human rights organisations have also expressed deep concern over the safety of activists in Zimbabwe. They are calling for immediate action to address these issues and protect those courageous individuals who dedicate their lives to advocating for change.

In response to the escalating situation, the CCC and other civil society organisations have called for solidarity and support from the local and international community. They are urging governments and human rights bodies to intervene, apply pressure, and ensure that justice is served for those affected by acts of violence and intimidation.

As the Bhebe family navigates this tumultuous period, their plea for safety and justice reverberates throughout the nation. It is essential that their concerns are heard and addressed promptly to uphold the principles of democracy, human rights, and social justice.
