Saldana shines in ‘Superman’ role

Even knowing beforehand that the writer of this film was Luc Bresson, I failed to gear myself for the wildest cinema ride imaginable.
International intrigue with gangsters, spies and war mongering all set in motion by a daddy’s little darling, who is age 6 as the film begins.
And seldom has an actress, Zoe Saldana, 31 years of age, Bolivian born, so insinuated herself into every imaginable form of crime, villainy and retribution. Ceaseless, highly orchestrated revenge for the murder of her father.
The film opens in Bogota, the capital of Colombia in South America. We learn and carry with us throughout the film, that Colombiana, the name of our child heroine, is also the name of a South American orchid and becomes the cinema-goer’s password and watchword as it is considered and mused over by both the American CIA and FBI.
As the film opens, Colombiana much later taking the name Jennifer when in America is being desperately instructed by her father, whose murder he has correctly predicted, is about to take place before her eyes.
Precocious in the extreme fully her father’s  daughter she sets the stage for the rest of her exploits, as she outwits and escapes her father’s killers.
Fully premoniscent of his coming assassination which takes place right before her eyes — he has provided the child with a talisman, a key and a series of names and addresses in America, with the advice (to a six-year-old) that she escape and seek refugee status.
Unfortunately, we are not shown the 20 or more years, which follow, but are vividly shown the results.
She has  become a female version of the twinned Superman and Batman.
Now in America, and almost immediately catching the attention of the two main federal crime fighting forces, the FBI and the CIA, she successfully eludes capture by cleverly leading both agencies down false paths and the confusion of both.
Seldom does a film depend so                 fully on the successful ability of a young, non-American actress to introduce herself into the vicissitudes of American crime and law enforcement.
This film is given the highest recommendation for those willing to pay attention.
