Chegutu Municipality has gone into partnership with the Salvation Army Church for the construction of a new secondary school in the town.
The project is expected to complement Government’s Vision 2030 with at least four more schools – Sadoma Extension, Chehamba, Battlefields and Tavoy – under construction across the province.
The schools are part of the 17 learning institutions being built across the country through a $20 million facility from the Opec Fund for International Development. According to minutes from the municipality’s full council meeting held on January 25 this year, the city fathers resolved to avail land for the project while the church would fund the school’s construction.
“Council approves the structuring of a partnership arrangement with Salvation Army Chegutu West Corps for purposes of constructing a secondary school on Stand Number 26077, Chegutu Township, measuring six hectares in order to benefit residents and ratepayers of Chegutu Municipality and, in accordance with such procedures and formalities as may be prescribed at law,” the resolution reads. The partnership is one of the many collaborations the Chegutu Municipality has engaged in since 2012 after also partnering National Foundation for the Disabled in the construction of a school for people living with disabilities.
The Salvation Army boasts of having about 2 000 schools globally benefiting in excess of 500 000 learners.
The church which celebrated its 125 years of existence in Zimbabwe three years ago also has plans to construct a university to complement its efforts in the education sector.
