LONDON. — Arsenal have completed the signing of Barcelona striker Alexis Sanchez — and are now chasing German World Cup soccer star Sami Khedira.
Chilean forward Sanchez flew in to London on Thursday to pass a medical at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground, then put pen to paper on a five-year contract worth about £140 000 a week.
Arsenal had agreed the £30 million fee with Barcelona this week and the deal was pulled off before the Spanish club finalised their deal for Liverpool striker Luis Saurez, which is expected to be completed this weekend.
Sanchez had confirmed that he wanted to join Arsenal rather than Liverpool or Juventus and the Gunners moved in quickly to secure manager Arsene Wenger’s No. 1 striking target this summer.
Sanchez cut short his holiday to fly into London on Thursday and Wenger said: “As many people have seen during the World Cup, Alexis is a fantastic footballer and we are delighted he is joining us. Alexis will add power, creativity and much quality to our squad and we are all looking forward to him joining up with us in a few weeks.
“He has consistently produced top-quality performances at the highest level for a number of seasons now and we are all excited to see him integrate into the Arsenal squad.” — Daily Express.
