Sandstorms hit Gokwe-North and parts of Mberengwa yesterday destroying tents put up as polling stations, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission officer in the Midlands, Mrs Dorcas Mpofu, has said.In an interview, Mrs Mpofu said however, everything remained on course to the successful hosting of the elections.
She said Zec was working hard, attending to the affected polling stations in time for elections today.
Mrs Mpofu said preparations for today’s harmonised elections in the province had gone on well save for the strong winds which hit Gokwe-Kabuyini area and some parts of Mberengwa, destroying infrastructure, including some polling station tents.
“Everything is on course for the successful holding of harmonised elections in the province save for a few problems in Gokwe North and some parts of Mberengwa. Strong winds hit Gokwe-Kabuyini area and some parts of Mberengwa destroying our tents which we had pitched up as polling stations.
We are taking care of the situation right now. I can assure you that everything will be in place by the time voting starts tomorrow (today).
All our polling officers are now at their stations,” said Mrs Mpofu.
Midlands province has 1 348 polling stations and 28 National Assembly constituencies.
Today’s elections are the second such election where Zimbabweans have to choose candidates to represent them in Local Authorities, National Assembly seats as well as elect a President, all in one day.
The plebiscite is expected to start at 7am running up to 7pm.
