Members of the South African Police Service and the Zimbabwe Republic Police Department conducted
a joint operation that detained more than 70 illegal foreign nationals without documents and
confiscated about 400,000 rands.
The operation was conducted mainly by female officers as they tried to identify rapists, murderers, and
human traffickers, according to Motlafela Mohapelo of the Limpopo Police.
"Through a concerted effort to detect car smuggling, human trafficking, theft of securities and money,
and trafficking in cigarettes and other goods, there was a successful operation led by Tembi Hadebe. The
operation was called Basadi, and it involved female law enforcement officers from the Limpopo Police
Force and the South African National Defense Force," said Mohapelo.
Here's what the police officers accomplished during the operation:
75 undocumented illegal citizens;
Confiscation of counterfeit goods worth R400,000;
5 suspects for rape and 2 for attempted rape;
73 suspects in gender-based violence and femicide;
The arrest of dozens of people for alcohol-related offenses and drug use.
The arrest of several people for organizing illegal gambling.
Recall that in order to engage in gambling in Zimbabwe, one must obtain a license. However, many
foreign sites operate in the country without a license. On the web, you can find many aggregator sites,
such as TwinSpinCa, which select the best casinos. So Zimbabweans have no problem finding
entertainment.
In some areas of the Limpopo River, it has been possible to find previously stolen cars that the
perpetrators tried to ferry to the other side of the river for sale in neighboring states. The vehicles had
previously drowned, but thanks to the water level lowering, they could retrieve them and return them
to their owners.
One of the vehicles (a Ford Ranger) still remains in the river, as it is not possible to retrieve it. Utilities
are awaiting further lowering of the river before retrieving it.
The crime rate in Zimbabwe and other South African countries is quite high, but local authorities and law enforcement agencies are trying their best to bring it down. Such raids using the police's ingenuity allow them to detect violations and apprehend large numbers of criminals, thereby reducing the criminal
burden on certain parts of the country. Time will tell how effective these tactics are, but we can already
conclude that unusual ways of fighting crime are quite effective.
