Say no to child abuse

OUR country has done a lot to ensure that children’s rights are protected.

Government has made its position clear in this regard and has facilitated a number of  outreach programmes in different communities.

Because of such awareness programmes, some perpetrators have been arrested, while victims have received support through necessary counselling and treatment. However, I feel we should not relax. There is still need to do more to end child abuse in all its forms.

Global reports show that more cases of child abuse continue to be reported daily.

What is even more disturbing is the fact that some cases go unreported.

It is the duty of parents, guardians, neighbours and other members of the community to report any suspected case of abuse to the authorities.

By reporting the cases, we save lives.

It has been proved over the years that abusers often do not limit themselves to a single target.

Thus, each time we do not report them, we are putting another child’s life in danger.

We should be each other’s keeper.

Victims must also be bold; they should stand their ground and report any cases of abuse.

Yes, some might be intimidated, but reporting the case will ensure justice is served.

You will get the necessary protection and, above all, you will have helped society.

Likewise, children must be taught never to keep secrets, especially if the situation involves another person physically or mentally abusing them.

Older people also need to be approachable.

Children must not be scared of confronting them should they face any challenges.

If anything, children must be friends with their parents or guardians.

This is healthy.

I would like to urge everyone to say no to all forms of abuse.
