Scabies outbreak at Msengezi High

residents in the adjacent communities said 20 children had to be sent home after the outbreak.
Officials at the school refused to comment during a visit at the school yesterday.
Education, Sport, Arts and Culture Secretary Dr Stephen Mahere said they will investigate the case.
“We have not received any information from the school but we are sending officials there so they can check on the situation,” he said.
Dr Mahere said they will seek the help of their counterparts from the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to curb the spread of the disease.
The school headmaster was not available yesterday amid reports that he had an altercation with parents on Saturday.
However, workers, pupils and parents of the affected children confirmed the outbreak.
The school has no water after being disconnected more than a month ago.
A pupil who has an affected friend said there was no water in the dormitories.
She said some of the pupils go for a week without bathing at times.
“Yes, it is true that there is an outbreak of scabies and some of our friends have been sent home.
“There is no water since February 1 and we have to walk a distance of more than two kilometres to ferry water from the community boreholes,” he said.
Parents who refused to be named confirmed that the school owed Zinwa US$26 000.
The school reportedly has an electricity bill of US$30 000 and has since been disconnected.
“They owe Zinwa and Zesa a lot of money and were cut off at the beginning of the term,” one parent said.
The school has contracted a company to ferry sewer from the school as the system is currently down.
