An assistant clerk at a private school in Chitungwiza appeared before a magistrate’s court for allegedly swindling the school of US$5 000 through fraudulently varying figures on receipts.

Fungai Mudzuto (28), employed by Cornerstone Primary and Secondary Schools, appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Winfilder Tiatara charged with fraud.

She pleaded not guilty.

She was remanded to October 10 for the start of her trial.

The State led by Ms Monalisa Karemba alleged that between May and July this year, Mudzuto stole money meant for school fees from Cornerstone schools by receipting higher amounts on issued copies of the receipts given to parents.

The alleged offence was discovered after school director Ms Elizabeth Makuwane demanded that the pupils pay all owing school fees, and they produced receipts showing that they had made full payments, while the receipt book copies showed they had paid less.
