Schoolkids rape shocks Khaya

ZANU-PF spokesperson and senator for Bulilima-Mangwe, Cde Simon Khaya Moyo has expressed shock following an increase in the number of primary school children who are being raped while on their way to and from school.

Cde Khaya Moyo, who is also Economic Planning Minister described the development as “barbaric and repulsive” and called for an urgent meeting with the traditional leadership to address the problem.

“The chilling story captioned ‘Bulilima rape trauma . . . Fear grips community as primary school kids rape increases’ isn’t only nauseating but primitive and not part of our culture.

“It can only demonstrate a total breakdown of our respectable traditional ways of growing up not only in that area, but generally in Zimbabwe,” said Khaya Moyo referring to a story published by this newspaper last week.

He added: “It’s never been part of our culture and must be stopped forthwith and fortunately, the beast has been apprehended and he must face the full wrath of the law.”

The minister said he would soon convene an urgent meeting with local traditional leaders to address the problem.

“This challenge needs the entire leadership in the area and other areas to meet and address this evil. As senator for the area and Economic Planning Minister in government and of course in my capacity as Zanu-PF spokesperson, I can’t be mum in light of such ghastly developments,” he said.

“As soon as I’ve approached all traditional leaders in the area and other leaders across the board, an indaba will be convened to address this evil. We’ve lost our moral values and this is unacceptable,” said Khaya Moyo.

Many primary school children from Bulilima have been raped while on their way to and from school.

Two Grade One pupils from Kandana Primary School were recently raped while on their way from school, the latest in a series of sexual assaults on school pupils in the area.

The route used by the Kandana Primary School pupils is through a bushy area and is the only one which they can use.
