Cde Ngwenya, who was declared a liberation hero, was buried at his family farm in Nkenyane in Bubi district where scores of Zanu-PF youths and senior party leaders converged to pay their last respects.
Cde Ngwenya was 29.
Speaking at the burial, Zanu-PF Bulawayo provincial chairman Cde Isaac Dakamela said the family and the party had lost an important cadre who was determined to see the people of Bulawayo prosper.
“I would like to express my sincere condolences to the Ngwenya family, the entire Bubi district and Zanu-PF because Cde Ngwenya was a son to all of us. He was a dedicated youth cadre who worked tirelessly to bring youths together and educate them about indigenisation, mining, farming and other empowerment programmes.
“It is unfortunate that we have lost Cde Ngwenya at a time when Zanu-PF is doing its restructuring exercise. He has left a gap that would be difficult to fill, as we needed him in this exercise and other programmes,” said Cde Dakamela.
He said Cde Ngwenya always reminded his peers about the importance of the liberation struggle.
“Cde Ngwenya was a focused and confident youth leader, who always reminded the people of Bulawayo that Zimbabwe came into being because of a protracted war against a racist regime,” he said.
Cde Dakamela said the country had lost a dedicated son of the soil who had great potential to change the lives of many youths.
The Zanu-PF youth chairman for Matabeleland South, Cde Washington Nkomo, said Cde Ngwenya worked well with other youths.
“He was concerned about the welfare of youths and worked tirelessly to spearhead economic empowerment programmes.
“Besides being committed to his work, Cde Ngwenya was a down to earth person who respected everyone, despite their age. He always wanted members of the party to be on the right track and was always ready to assist,” said Cde Nkomo.
The Zanu-PF national secretary for administration in the Youth League, Cde Leslie Ncube, said the youth league across the country had lost a true son of the soil.
“Cde Ngwenya rose through the ranks and this is testimony of who he was. He was a humble and focused man who knew the meaning of the revolution.
“The entire Zanu-PF executive is shaken by his death. We have more questions than answers as we are trying to come to terms with what happened,” said Cde Ncube.
He thanked the Presidium for according Cde Ngwenya the liberation hero status.
“We would like to thank the Presidium for according our colleague the liberation hero status. We are happy that he has been laid to rest at one of the farms we took over from the imperialists. May his soul rest in peace as the revolution continues.
“We would like to send our condolences to the Ngwenya family and the Zanu-PF Bulawayo province,” said Cde Ncube.
Cde Ngwenya’s father, who is a war veteran and the Zanu-PF secretary for lands in Bubi, Cde Morgan Ngwenya, said his son’s death was a huge blow to the family and the party.
“My son was gifted with leadership qualities, which I realised when he was young. His friends followed him all the time until I was forced to move him to a boarding school.
“He joined Zanu-PF and was a very active member of the party. At one time I called him to come and work from home but his colleagues and party leaders approached me and requested him to work in Nkulumane,” said Cde Ngwenya.
Cde Ngwenya is survived by two children.
