Scores of pupils escape unhurt as school kombi crashes into bridge in Gweru

Scores of pupils escaped unhurt on Tuesday morning after a commuter omnibus transporting them to school veered off the road and came to rest on top of a bridge in Woodlands Park Phase 2 after the driver allegedly lost control.

The omnibus was ferrying learners to St Paul’s Catholic Primary School when it struck a bridge barrier, leaving the vehicle precariously perched on the structure.

Despite the impact, all the pupils safely exited the vehicle without sustaining injuries.

An eyewitness, Mr Thomas Moyo, said the incident could have ended in tragedy.

“The omnibus was transporting pupils to St Paul’s Catholic Primary School when it struck a bridge barrier in Woodlands Park Phase 2. Despite the impact, none of the occupants sustained injuries,” he said.

The driver reportedly failed to report the accident to the police as required by law. The incident was later reported by employees from River Valley Properties, who are working in the suburb.

Police had not yet commented on the incident by the time of publication.
