THE latest straight-to-DVD (or streaming) action thriller, Prisoner of War, delivers precisely what fans of Scott Adkins have come to expect: intensely choreographed and brutally executed fight sequences. Adkins, a prolific and consistently committed genre actor, steps into the role of Wing Commander Wright in this World War II-themed action film.
A genuine Mixed Martial Arts expert, Adkins is in commanding form throughout, with the expertly staged combat scenes standing out as the film’s undeniable highlight. His physical performance is, as ever, top-tier, drawing comparisons to the relentless, visceral energy of the John Wick franchise. These sequences showcase his martial arts prowess with precision and flair, offering adrenaline-fuelled moments that fans will relish.
However, the film falters when it comes to narrative depth. While Adkins shines in the action scenes, the plot leans heavily on familiar wartime tropes and lacks originality. The storyline, centred around honourable conduct and a prison break, feels underdeveloped and predictable. Despite Adkins’ compelling presence, the characters and their arcs fail to resonate, leaving the film feeling more like a showcase of physical skill than a fully realised drama.
Prisoner of War ultimately serves as a solid platform for Adkins’ martial arts mastery, but it struggles to rise above its genre conventions. It’s a film that delivers on action but falls short on storytelling, making it a satisfying watch for fight scene enthusiasts, though perhaps less so for those seeking emotional or narrative complexity.
