THE recently concluded Bulawayo Arts Awards (BAAs) introduced audiences to fresh talent, not only among nominees and performers, but also on the main stage through one of the event’s hosts, Nozinhle Evelyn Gumede.

Gumede co-hosted the awards last Saturday alongside seasoned broadcaster Bkay of Skyz Metro FM and multi-talented Lady Tshawe, confidently steering the night’s proceedings. Her appearance brought a refreshing new voice to one of the city’s premier cultural events.

Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub caught up with the 23-year-old Bulawayo-born creative after the ceremony to learn more about her journey.

Already making a mark beyond the arts space, Gumede is a model whom some may have recognised from notable pageants in the country. A model full of promise, Gumede was among the 18 Miss Universe Zimbabwe finalists in 2024 and later reached the Top 8 after placing in the Top 12 at Miss World Zimbabwe.

She is also the founder and director of a youth-led initiative focused on climate change education, sustainable agriculture, food security and community resilience.

For her, hosting the BAAs was not a departure from her activism, but a natural extension of it.
“At first glance, they may seem like two different worlds, but for me, they are deeply connected. Climate action is about people, culture and storytelling, and the arts are one of the most powerful ways to tell our stories,” she said.

Gumede believes music, fashion, film and performance play a critical role in shaping youth identity and confidence, particularly in Bulawayo. By blending environmental advocacy with creativity, she says the message becomes more relatable and impactful. Reflecting on the experience, she described co-hosting the BAAs as “surreal and deeply humbling”.

“Celebrating Bulawayo’s artistic talent on such a platform filled me with pride. The most rewarding moment was seeing artistes feel seen and affirmed. It reminded me why representation and platforms matter,” she said.

She also praised the collaborative energy between the hosting trio, noting the respect and synergy shared on stage.
“It was an honour working with such established professionals. Everyone brought their own strengths, and I believe I added a fresh, youthful energy while staying grounded in purpose,” she said.

According to Gumede, balance comes from clarity of purpose.

“Everything I do is rooted in impact and storytelling. Advocacy has taught me confidence and intention, which strengthens my media work, while media helps me communicate complex issues in a relatable way,” she said, adding that rest is equally important.

Interestingly, Gumede landed the BAA hosting gig after being scouted on TikTok, where she had posted videos mock-presenting the BAAs and the National Arts Merit Awards. The organisers liked what they saw and decided to give her a chance. – Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
