PREVELEGE Garadi, an emerging young sculptor from Mabvuku high density suburb, held a public exhibition of his works at his home last Friday which attracted the attention of EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Aldo Dell’Ariccia as well as Kuwait ambassador Ahmad K. al-Jeeran.
The event, which also drew a local crowd, was a culmination of the young sculptor’s hard work in trying to make himself visible in an industry dominated by veteran artists like Dominic Benhura and Shephard Madzikatire and Tapfuma Gutsa.
The 16-sculpture exhibition included pieces with various themes and titles including “Fish Skeleton”, “Whirlwind”, “The Judge”, “Waves Fragments” and “Ball Owl”, and had pieces which were also abstract and depicting images from a subconscious point of view.
Garadi has held a few exhibitions including Gutsa’s “Mulonga” (2012) and the Buddies Annual Festival of Arts (2009) sponsored by Patsime Trust.
He has also exhibited at Harare International Festival of the Arts (2005, 2006 and 2008), the Ethno Design Project in 2008 and the Sanganai World Travel Expo (2010).
However, the artist expressed dissatisfaction with local sculpture buyers and agents.
“Some of our local art buyers make it hard for upcoming sculptors to break into the industry because they have bias towards veteran artists whom they believe are marketable because of their previous exposure,” he said.
