THE months of September and October saw an influx of desperate English Language candidates seeking assistance from experts all over the shore. I had my own share of the ‘pilgrimage’ in desperate search of expertise to re-sit the Form 4 English examination, some for the fourth, fifth and sixth times. Here is the trick. Seek assistance very early in the year. You cannot look for English experts two days before examination day and hope for a miracle to happen.
The skills demanded of you to do well in English in an examination cannot possibly be mastered overnight.
No matter how much an expert explains and teaches, and no matter how much the student understands the skills, there is need for enough time to practice.
There are too many skills needed to ensure the command of English Language in Paper One, Section A is achievable in all composition types.
In Section B. candidates need to know the formats of guided compositions and demands of each question type: speeches, reports, letters, letters to the editor or articles to a newspaper, pie charts etc.
In Paper Two, you need special coaching on how to handle summaries and the Registers section. This takes time. And you need the time.
I was this year inundated with many students who badly needed the time which was not there because they came in the eleventh hour. Be advised. No expert can perform miracles.
Even medical doctors advise patients to bring their health problems to them early. They simply mean no doctor can resurrect the dead.
I tell you sometimes I am happy to deal with very difficult cases; these I deal with immediately, and I have done that on many occasions, but listen, I confess the impossible is only possible with a little more time.
May be even God expects the sick to come to Him when they are still intact, and not when they are only bones.
I can imagine even He saying, “You waited until you are finished, what do you want me to repair or restore here?”
A baby is never born before nine months, no matter how much expectant and desirous the pregnant mother maybe.
Those with ears to hear have heard. Time! Time! Time!
