A 23-year-old security guard from Headlands drowned last week while trying to retrieve fishing nets he had confiscated from fishmongers, who were poaching in a dam at Morris Farm.
Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the death of Knowledge Mundityira.
Insp Kakohwa said on March 4, Mundityira and his workmates Don Chiradza (32) and Godwill Chikodzi (32), who were on their work shift as security guards at Morris Farm in Headlands, found several fish mongers who were fishing illegally at the dam.
“Mundityira approached the fish mongers and chased them away from the dam as part of his duties,” he said.
“After chasing them away, he dived into the dam in a bid to confiscate the fishing nets that were used by the fish mongers.
“He entered into the dam with the intention of retrieving these fish nets.
“His friends tried to rescue him, but failed to do so.
“He caught the nets and struggled to swim back to shore, causing him to drown.
“The ZRP Sub-Aqua Unit was called in to help locate Mundityira’s body after his colleagues had unsuccessfully searched for it. It was retrieved later on the same day.”
Insp Kakohwa warned members of the public to desist from fishing without permits and not to enter water bodies when they are not good swimmers, as this had cost the lives of many in the past months.
