TENSIONS flared in Nyamandlovu, Matabeleland North province over a land dispute, leading to the arrest of a security guard for allegedly shooting at a member of a mob involved in the confrontation.

Bukhosi Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Collet Ncube facing a charge of attempted murder.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was remanded out of custody to 31 January on US$100 bail.

When asked by the magistrate why he committed the offence he said that he did not shoot towards the individuals involved in the confrontation.

“These allegations are not true, l did not shoot in the direction of the mob. The accusations that l pointed a gun at one of the people who was part of the mob are not true and based on suspicions.

“I fired two warning shots, not four as the State alleges but the crowd kept on advancing towards me,” he said.

Allegations against Ndlovu are that on 11 January at 11pm at a plot belonging to Charles Mabhena, he saw a mob advancing towards him and he tried chasing it away to no avail.

Mabhena has been staying in the plot for over 17 years and on the day in question a mob of about 80 people visited the plot.

Ndlovu then resorted to firing four warning shots and when he saw them advancing, he then approached one of the people and threatened to shoot him.

The matter was reported to the police and investigations were carried out leading to his arrest.
