There is urgent need for the provision of decent funeral and burial services for the country’s heroes, heroines and other uniformed forces who took part in the liberation struggle, Defence Minister Sydney Sekeramayi said on Wednesday. Speaking at the commissioning of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Funeral Parlour after its upgrading at One Commando, Minister Sekeramayi said the facility had played a significant role in keeping at bay hostile publicity during operations in terms of casualty issues.
The funeral parlour will now accommodate 28 bodies; and 41 national heroes and heroines have been provided with funeral services at the parlour so far.
“The Ministry of Defence has a constitutional mandate to defend the nation and in the process of carrying out this mandate, the organisation may suffer casualties. Death occurs when least expected, hence the ministry has a responsibility to administer funerals,” he said.
“The commissioning of this parlour signifies the commitment ZDF has towards the improvement of the welfare of the ZDF members by ensuring that they are afforded decent burials.” The Vice President of Zimbabwe Association of Funeral Assurers Dr Talent Maziwisa, lauded the prevailing peaceful environment in the country.
Among organisations that contributed towards the refurbishment were Nyaradzo Funeral Services, Doves Funeral Services and Moonlight Funeral Services, as well as Zimnat and Zinara.
