Selmor to be honoured

It seems Afro jazz sensation, Selmor Mtukudzi, is finally getting the respect she deserves if a Tribute Dinner that has been organised in her honour by Strides Hospitality and Entertainment is anything to go by.

The Tribute Dinner is to be held at Cresta Lodge on June 25 and will feature some of Zimbabwe’s best female musicians who include the likes of Fungisayi Zvakavapano-Mashavave, Edith WeUtonga, Ammara Brown, Cynthia Mare and Shingi Mangoma. In an interview with The Herald Entertainment, Strides Hospitality and Entertainment group chief executive officer Tawanda Dube said the Tribute Dinner is to honour Selmor’s contribution in the upliftment of women and the girl child.

“The Tribute Dinner for Selmor Mtukudzi will be held on June 25 at Cresta Lodge, in light of her recent work in advocacy of empowerment of women and the girl child and the fight against poverty.

“Addressing gender disparities empowers a society, balances its affections, aspirations, allegiances, promotes understanding, communicates peace, kindles love, builds relationships and is a gateway to happiness,” he said.

“As such this dinner is a platform to commemorate and celebrate women and girls as well as honour Selmor Mtukudzi who has, despite the odds, achieved success as a musician, women’s ambassador and advocate of the ‘Strong Girl’ movement.

“This dinner will further serve as a forerunner to the Women of Substance Awards Ceremony,” he added.

Selmor is among an outstanding line-up of top women musicians from across Africa that have joined forces with ONE, an international campaigning and advocacy organisation, to create a song called “Strong Girl”.

Some of the artistes who worked with Selmor Mtukudzi on the track include Arielle T (Gabon), Gabriela (Mozambique), Judith Sephuma (South Africa), Vanessa Mdee (Tanzania), Victoria Kimani (Kenya) Waje and Yemi Alade (Nigeria).
