SENATE on Tuesday ratified the convention establishing the International Organisation for Mediation that seeks to promote peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The ratification was done in terms of Section 327 of the Constitution that compels Parliament to ratify any Convention, Treaty or Agreement acceded to, concluded or executed by or under the authority of the President with one or more foreign states of governments or international organisations.
The motion for the ratification was moved by the Deputy Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Nobert Mazungunye.
Zimbabwe signed the convention establishing the IOM in May last year in Hong Kong, China.
“The Convention will advance and promote the use of mediation and will be a useful complement to existing international dispute settlement mechanisms,” Deputy Minister Mazungunye said.
Senator Robson Mavenyengwa supported the ratification of the Convention, saying Zimbabwe advocates peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“We believe that signing this agreement is good because in Zimbabwe, we value freedom and peace,” Senator Mavenyengwa said before the Convention was ratified.
“When there are conflicts, we want people to talk about and resolve issues amicably. I have risen in support of that convention and want this House to support it because it promotes peace.”
