A 44-YEAR-OLD man from Dingumuzi in Plumtree with a history of domestic violence was jailed for 12 months in prison after assaulting his wife for reporting him to the police.
The serial wife basher Joel Ngwenya received a 12-month jail sentence when he appeared before Plumtree magistrate Shumirai Mutimodhlo charged with physical abuse as defined in Section 3 (1) (a) as read with Section 4 (1) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.
The sentence follows his previous convictions for repeatedly assaulting his wife Sihawukele Dube (43).
The court heard from the prosecutor Selestine Madziwa that on 23 April 2024 at around 9pm Joel came home drunk and began verbally abusing his wife with vulgar language. He then accused her of reporting him to the police.
He then assaulted her several times all over the body with fists and open hands. The wife went and reported the matter to the police leading to Joel’s arrest.
The arrest revealed a disturbing pattern of Joel abusing his wife.
