Sewer bursts worsen in Chitown

Municipal Reporter

More sewers are bursting in Chitungwiza and residents want the council to upgrade the existing aged infrastructure which can no longer cater for the mushrooming population.

There has been an increase in sewer bursts in the last few days, allowing raw sewage to flow into streets posing serious health hazards to both residents and the environment.

Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association acting director Mr Brighton Kanyama said the council should do something immediately.

These sewer problems are being worsened by the shortages of running water in Chitungwiza. We are getting water for only 2 days per week so when the water flows all the  aging pipes will be blocked by waste.

The situation is getting worse now as the sewage is now flowing on the surface in all parts of the town with the hotspots being Rufaro Road, Zengeza 4 opposite Pagomba area, behind Zengeza 8 primary school, C-Junction paMukanya and Unit G hostels.

The council is supposed to prioritise the issue of service delivery. We as residents expect to see were our money goes since we are paying rates every month, but we are not getting the value of our money, he said.

Mr Kurupati said the council must buy all the sewer department needed including protective clothing.

This is a serious cause of concern since we do not expect employees to get in contact with raw sewerage using bare hands, he said.

During a tour of Chitungwiza a few weeks ago, Residents Association of Chitungwiza Trust secretary general Mr Stanley Makwiramiti said there are sewer bursts in all 25 wards with council turning a blind eye to the issue which has been ongoing.

If we ask the council on their current position in terms of fixing sewer leaks, they say the sewer infrastructure is old and needed to be rehabilitated.

As residents we are fed up with their excuses and we need to demonstrate because we are living on a health time bomb. Some of the sewage is flowing in houses in Zengeza 4, he said.
