Shabanie’s title hopes wane

SHABANIE Mine’s chances of a quick return to the Premier League suffered a huge blow following a 1-2 defeat by Gweru United in a Zifa Central Soccer League clash at Maglas Stadium in Zvishavane. Gweru United scored their goals through Blessing Sibanda and Ariel Makopa to storm into the top five with 36 points.

There was commotion at Maglas Stadium after the match as irate Shabanie Mine fans demanded the head of head coach Tendai Chikuni.

However, Chikuni pleaded for calm saying the side was on a rebuilding mission for next season as they were out of contention for the title.

“We’re effectively out of the (championship) race and now have to focus on rebuilding a side to compete for the title next season. I’m confident that if we come up with a strong squad, we’ll be able to run away with it next season,” said Chikuni.

Although the coach seems to have given up, the asbestos miners still have 24 points to play for before the curtain comes down on the league.

Gweru United coach Peter Manoti said his focus is to finish in the top eight.

“We’ve a crop of youngsters and our main objective is to develop their talent. Our aim is to finish in the top eight and a top four finish will be a bonus for us,” said Manoti.

Elsewhere, army side Tongogara and Sable Chemicals failed to take advantage of league leaders Border Strikers’ 1-1 stalemate against Vumbachikwe to narrow the gap.

Tongogara were edged 1-2 by Blanket Mine while Sable Chemicals were held 0-0 by struggling ZETDC Southern Region.

The results mean Border Strikers, who sit on 50 points, maintain their nine point cushion at the top of the standings.

Results: ZPC Munyati 3 – 0 ZRP Beitbridge, MSU 3 – 0 Mvuma Stars, ZETDC 0 – 0 Sable Chemicals, FC Platinum U 19 3 – 1 Ivan Hoe, Vumbachikwe 1 – 1 Border Strikers, Shabanie Mine 1 – 2 Gweru United, Chrome Stars 2 – 0 Silo United, Blanket Mine 2 – 1 Tongogara
