THERE is renewed optimism for Bulawayo’s film sector following the high-profile screening of Shaka iLembe Season 2, at a local lodge on Friday. The event, hosted by MultiChoice Zimbabwe, signalled the company’s commitment to strengthening its presence in the country’s cultural capital and reviving the region’s underdeveloped film industry.
The screening drew a sizable and enthusiastic crowd, eager to witness the next chapter of the acclaimed historical drama that chronicles the life and reign of King Shaka Zulu. The first episode of Season 2 officially premiered on Mzansi Magic (DStv Channel 161) yesterday.
MultiChoice Zimbabwe General Manager, Siyabulela Jemsana, speaking at the launch, emphasised Bulawayo’s importance to the company’s strategic vision.
“It’s an honour to be here with you today as we launch Season 2 of Shaka iLembe . This project is a celebration of our culture and history, told in a compelling and world-class manner. We deliberately chose Bulawayo for this screening because of the city’s role as a custodian of culture and heritage,” said Jemsana.

He said that the series is more than just entertainment — it is a cultural milestone that encourages dialogue, fosters national pride and reflects the power of African storytelling.
“Season 2 promises to inspire, educate, and unify through the epic story of King Shaka. This screening here shows our confidence in the growth prospects of Bulawayo and the broader Matabeleland region.”
The evening’s proceedings were brought to life by popular local entertainer Madlela Sikhobokhobo, who emceed the event and kept the audience engaged. Attendees used the occasion to advocate for more such engagements in the city — a clear indication of the demand for investment in local film development.
Bulawayo and the Matabeleland region have long struggled with a stagnant film industry, hindered by limited funding and a lack of mentorship. However, the success of this event, and the presence of key industry players, suggest that change may be on the horizon.

Among the dignitaries present was Chief Mbusi Dakamela of Nkayi District, a respected traditional leader in Matabeleland North. As a token of appreciation, MultiChoice Zimbabwe presented him with an Explora 3B decoder to enjoy the new season of Shaka iLembe. The gift was handed over by Jemsana and MultiChoice Zimbabwe’s Head of Marketing and Sales, Gerald Ngonyamo.
Also in attendance were veteran filmmaker Percy Soko and other creative professionals, signalling strong regional interest in revitalising the screen arts.
Shaka iLembe Season 2 deepens the complex narrative of King Shaka’s rise, with Lemogang Tsipa reprising his role in a season that explores themes of betrayal, strategy, spirituality and sacrifice. The show also features powerhouse performances from Nomzamo Mbatha as Queen Nandi and Dawn Thandeka King as Mkabayi, whose clandestine networks and influence shape the political landscape.

Viewers can expect cinematic visuals, intense drama and large-scale battle sequences that elevate the production to new heights. The season portrays various historical chieftaincies, including those of Senzangakhona, Zwide,
Phakathwayo and Dingiswayo, making its historical context relevant to a wide audience across Southern Africa.
The new season is also available on DStv Catch Up, allowing viewers to revisit the story at their convenience.
