SOUTH AFRICAN award-winning epic series Shaka iLembe, is poised to once again break viewership records as it returns for its much-anticipated second season on DStv’s Mzansi Magic, on June 15.
MultiChoice, the multinational broadcasting service provider, is aiming to attract even more viewers with the debut of Season 2.
When Shaka iLembe Season 1 premiered in 2023, DStv recorded remarkable viewership figures, with over 3,6 million people tuning in to watch the first episode — setting a new benchmark for the highest-ever viewership recorded by MultiChoice.
Thanks to these impressive numbers, the show climbed to the number one spot on the DStv App in several African countries, including Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, among others.
Speaking during his visit to Nkayi in Matabeleland North earlier this year, heartthrob actor, Abdul Khoza — who reprises his role in Season 2 — offered fans a glimpse of what to expect from the upcoming instalment. The acclaimed actor, who portrays the fearless warrior Ciji, revealed that Season 2 will focus on Shaka’s rise to power.
He added that the storyline will expand to explore ethnic rivalries, personal betrayals and political power struggles, all intricately woven into a rich historical narrative that extends beyond the Zulu kingdom.
“As we continue the story, Season 2 picks up with Shaka and Nandi arriving at KwaNobamba, where Shaka begins his reign as the new Zulu king. There are new characters and territories in the upcoming season, meaning we’ll take viewers from the majestic mountains of the Swazi kingdom to the rolling hills of the Xhosa. This is a powerful story that reflects what truly happened during those ancient times,” Khoza said.
In addition to Khoza, returning cast members include Nomzamo Mbatha (Nandi), Wiseman Mncube (Zwide), Dawn Thandeka King (Mkabayi), Khabonina Qubeka (Ntombazi) and Mondli Makhoba (Ngomane) — a dream team of Mzansi talent bringing the drama to life.
New faces joining Season 2 include Zamani Mbatha as Nomahlanjana, the power-hungry son of Zwide; Amanda Seome as Ntombazana, Zwide’s cunning daughter; and Anele Nele as Sikhunyana, another of Zwide’s sons. Also entering the saga are Sikhanyiso Sithole as Princess Hletjiwe, a radiant Ngwane royal, and Luyanda Zuma as Liyana, a bold maiden in the Queen Mother’s court.
Executive producer, Desiree Markgraaff has promised even more cinematic brilliance and emotional depth in the upcoming season.
“The new cast members bring fresh energy, exploring the complexities of power, love and loyalty in a turbulent era. South Africa is rich with characters and we’re only beginning to uncover them. With a compelling narrative and cinematic excellence, Shaka iLembe is more than just a series—it’s a cultural phenomenon,” said Markgraaff.
