Zanu-PF National Chairman Cde Simon Khaya Moyo says the current crop of journalists have become weapons of destruction.
He said in some quarters, the noble profession of journalism was being used for the regime change agenda.
“Journalists have today become a weapon of dividing and it is disturbing that once the pen was mightier than the sword, but the pen is now being used as a sword,” said Cde Moyo.
Cde Khaya Moyo was speaking during a surprise birthday party held for Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu at a city hotel on Tuesday.
He described Cde Shamu as a dedicated party cadre.
“He has an illustrious history. He left the country in 1974 to join the liberation struggle in Mozambique as a very young robust and disciplined youth,” he said.
Cde Moyo also commended Minister Shamu for being an accomplished professional journalist. “He is an accomplished journalist trained to know that journalism is a noble profession,” he said.
Cde Moyo said there was no doubt that President Mugabe saw Cde Shamu’s exceptional professionalism and charisma and appointed him to serve in various capacities.
“He is a capable national commissar. You have done us proud. I’m proud of your sterling contribution to defence of our independence and sovereignty,” he said.
Media, Information and Publicity acting secretary Major Anyway Mutambudzi (Retired) described Cde Shamu as a selfless, hardworking and visionary leader.
“Minister Shamu is an approachable person who has an open door policy. He cares for everyone and is always available to assist others with their problems,” said Maj Mutambudzi.
