ADRIEL SHAMHU believes the growing sport of pool has silently become lucrative, and more people should join the bandwagon after landing the prestigious National Elite Pool Players Association of Zimbabwe July title last weekend.
Shamhu, a Zimbabwe international, who has raised the country’s flag internationally, finally got to lay his hands on the monthly NEPAZ edition series after squeezing his way past Allan Cee, whom he beat 4-3 in the final. The tournament was held at Earthquip Village in Harare after Marondera pulled out as hosts at the 11th hour.
But that never deterred a determined Shamhu from perfectly stroking his way to over US$1 200 first prize from main sponsor Tatenda Mutombo.
“It was a tight journey with over 200 elite players taking part,” said Shamhu.
“Pool is never a game of luck. You need to be meticulous, but what I can tell you right now is that pool has now become a lucrative sport, competing with other top sports up there.
“We play the game every week, as leagues, individuals, and sponsors are coming.
“The good thing about it is that anyone can join, regardless of their age or gender.
“While there are a lot of talks surrounding the environments in which it is played, let me tell you that this is one of the few sports helping the country shun drugs and other social ills.
“The environments are strictly professional, and the concentration levels needed will always make you organised.
That’s the beauty of pool. I have earned a lot in pool this year alone, and my advice is that people should join this sport.”
Mutombo said, “We have become a part of the professional and elite pool in this country. “We congratulate Shamhu, and we encourage others to come aboard.”
