SHEASHAM Gweru Queens coach Gibson Matemera believes his team is on track to hit their season target after edging Black Mambas Queens 1-0 at Mkushi Grounds on Saturday.
Defender Brett Mahara struck in just the second minute, and that goal proved enough to secure victory for the Construction Girls, as Sheasham are affectionately known.
The win lifted them to seventh on the Zimbabwe Women’s Premier Soccer League table with 30 points from 20 matches.
While they are still within reach of the top four, Matemera has set his players a more modest target: a top-eight finish, an improvement from the 10th place they managed last season.
“Our target this season is to finish better than we did in the last season. Anything above that is a huge positive for the team,” Matemera said.
“At the moment I think we are on course, the signs are showing, and my hope is that we continue on that trajectory.”
Now in his second year in charge, the soft-spoken coach says he is laying foundations for bigger ambitions. He believes the squad will be ready to challenge for the title next season.
“The main objective is to be able to compete for the title in the not so distant future. The plan is that next season we should be competitive enough to challenge for honours,” Matemera added.
“As a coach I have given myself three seasons to build this team into a strong outfit. This is my second season in charge and next year, we will be among the top teams.”
