A 12-YEAR-OLD boy discovered a human skeleton which had two t-shirts, a short, $2 and Zimbabwean coins, in what is suspected to be an act of witchcraft. The discovery of human remains near a river in Nyamamdlovu on Monday has set tongues wagging in Chief Mahlathini’s area. The incident which has rattled the farming community has seen some villagers following up on relatives who disappeared without a trace.
According to sources, the skeletal remains of a human being were found buried in a hole along Zozomba Stream in Sedgewick Village by the boy who was herding cattle.
“We are still in shock over the discovery of these human remains. No-one knows who they belong to. This has also given rise to suspicions that the discovery could be a ritual murder,” said one elderly villager who refused to be named.
The elder said what was most frightening about the discovery was the items that included money and clothes found with the skeleton, fueling speculation that evil forces were at play.
Confirming the discovery, Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Siphiwe Makonese said the human remains were found on 4 September at around 1pm.
“The 12-year-old was looking for his stray cattle along Zozomba River when he discovered a human skeleton in a hole along the river. He informed Washington Moyo (57) of the same area who proceeded to the scene with two other villagers before reporting the matter to the police the same day at around 7pm. Two t-shirts, a khaki short, US$2 and Zimbabwean coins were recovered,” said Insp Makonese.
She said the skeleton was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital mortuary for study.
