KUDAKWASHE “Nkembe” Mahachi needed only a few minutes to remind Highlanders why his return still stirs emotion.

Thrown into the closing stages of the Jairos Jiri Charity Cup clash against Dynamos at Barbourfields Stadium on Sunday, the veteran winger delivered a bright, energetic cameo that lifted the crowd and hinted at a season in which experience could still prove invaluable for Bosso.

Mahachi’s touches were crisp, his movement deliberate, and in a short spell he injected a spark into a Highlanders side still working towards full sharpness ahead of the new campaign. Each time he drove at defenders, the stands roared back, recognising the familiar flair of a player whose time at the club has always been associated with moments of brilliance.

For a player returning to a team where expectations are constant, his brief appearance felt symbolic. It was a reminder of what he still offers: composure, creativity and a steadying influence in the attacking third — qualities Highlanders will rely on as they blend youthful energy with seasoned experience this season.

His return also carries a sense of redemption, both for Mahachi and for fans who have followed his winding journey back to the black and white. He understands the responsibility that comes with pulling on the Highlanders shirt again, and he believes the early signs are promising.

“I would like to thank the coach and Highlanders for giving me this opportunity to come and showcase my talent again. This is my first trophy against Dynamos. I’m over the moon. We are going to celebrate but the new season is yet to start. We are a new team with a mixture of youngsters and senior players.

We need to push as a team, work hard and seek to achieve a lot. More happy days are coming for this team,” said Mahachi.

Highlanders are rebuilding, and while the season has yet to begin, Mahachi’s cameo offered a glimpse of how important his experience could be in helping guide the next generation through the demands of a long campaign.

If he can stay fit and continue influencing matches in short, decisive bursts, Bosso may discover that his return brings far more than nostalgia — it could inject belief at exactly the moment they need it.
