Shortage of patrol cars affects ZRP

said.
Senior Assistant Commissioner Martin Chari said this during the first Quarterly Cop of the Month Awards held in Harare on Tuesday.
Snr Asst Comm Chari said traffic flow had increased, especially in Harare and Bulawayo and officers needed smaller cars to tackle the congestion.

“It is very difficult at the moment to effectively control traffic because we have no vehicles. We would want small vehicles as it makes it easier to control traffic as compared to doing so on foot.” He said police faced difficulties in dealing with kombi drivers who tookadvantage of the foot patrols.

“Kombi drivers are a menace because they know they are faster than these officers but on highways where they know we have mobile officers they drive more carefully,” he said.
Snr Asst Comm Chari said most police officers were surviving on well-wishers for transport while on duty.

He urged the Harare City Council to repair malfunctioning traffic lights in the city. 20 police details received awards for duties performed between January and March this year.
Seven of them were women.
