After a setback due to financial challenges, organisers of Zimbabwe Radio Awards have finally got assistance from various sponsors. The inaugural awards, which made headlines last months after shifting dates due to lack of sponsorship, are now set to be held on October 29 at 7 Arts Theatre, Harare. The sponsors include Astro Mobile, Dairibord and Powertel among others while major stations like StarFM, ZiFM stereo, PowerFM, Radio Zimbabwe, Sport FM, and National FM will also be involved in the event.

The awards are a brainchild of local online entertainment magazine Celebrity-check in a bid to honour local radio personalities.

Speaking to journalists in Harare, ZIRA project director Agrippa Palazi said he was happy with how the sponsors came on board as this will go a long way in developing the sector.

He said preparations for the awards are underway.

“All is going according to plan as preparations for the awards are underway and everything is moving smoothly.

“We have received sponsorship from different organisations,” he said.

More than 50 radio personalities are battling for honours in 33 categories that include Best Urban Female Presenter/Producer, Best Urban Male Presenter/Producer, Most Popular Urban Female Presenter/Producer, Most Popular Urban Male Presenter/Producer and Best DJ among others.

Palazi said the awards are meant to honour radio personalities for informing and entertaining the nation on different issues.

“The awards which are running under the ‘Honouring a celebrity behind a celebrity’ are meant to honour radio personalities in recognition of their work in informing and entertaining. The awards will help create relations between radio stations and various organisations,” he said.

He said the awards will also help to support radio personalities as they will be noticed nationwide on radio and the Go Green Project.

“The awards will help support radio personalities as they will be noticed nationwide and it will also support the Go Green project which raises awareness on environmental issues,” he said.
