Shurugwi Town Council is set to establish a recreational park at the old Shurugwi Golf Course, as part of its plans to attain municipal status by 2020. In an interview, Shurugwi Town chairman, Mr Tsungai Makore, said the council availed 40 hectares of land for the construction of the park which will contain sporting facilities and supermarkets.

“We will soon construct a multi-million dollar recreational park in Shurugwi Central Business District,” he said. “The 40 hectare piece of land has been availed and the park will contain supermarkets and sporting facilities like a golf course, swimming pool, basketball court, netball and volley ball pitches.

“As a council we want to come up with a park that is sensitive to gender and the people with disabilities because everyone is equal.”

Mr Makore said although the council has not come up with a final budget, they have met with Minister of Sport, Arts and Recreation Cde Kazembe Kazembe.

“We have met with Minister of Sports Kazembe Kazembe and he promised that his Ministry will fund the construction of sporting facilities in the park, while we fund the construction of other facilities,” he said.

Mr Makore said at the moment he could not disclose the total cost expected as they were yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with investors.

“For now we can not disclose the total costs expected as we are in the process of signing MoUs with the investors,” he said.
He said construction of the recreational park will create employment for the local community, especially the youths.
Recently, the mining town revealed that leading retail giants Pick ‘n’ Pay and Spar have expressed interest to invest in the mining town.
