SHURUGWI Town Council has launched a witch-hunt for the individuals who leaked to Chronicle details of a directive ordering municipal police details at the local authority to salute councillors and senior council officials.Council management is demanding individual reports from municipal police details following the publication of the story in the Tuesday edition of Chronicle that council security officers were now required to salute management staff and councillors.
The story has reportedly triggered confusion and panic within the structures of the council.
“We are now being investigated. We have been tasked to write reports explaining ourselves. They want to know the person who gave the story to the media and we are now being victimised because of this simple issue,” said one.
The municipal policeman said it was now a chargeable offence if they fail to salute a senior official or councillor when at town house.
“Since the story was published, if you fail to quickly salute a member of staff or a councillor you will be branded a sellout and accused of leaking the story to the media. Our workplace is now more like hell,” said another.
They said the chairperson for housing and health services committee under whose supervision the department of security falls, has been tasked to lead the witch-hunt.
“We now fear losing our jobs. Clr Mapwanya is the one who communicated to us that the council demanded reports following that story in the newspaper and we are supposed to hand the reports to him,” said another municipal policeman.
Clr Mapwanya refused to comment when he was contacted yesterday. Council chairman Tsungirai Makore was not available for comment.
He however, told Chronicle on Monday that the resolution was not new, saying it was passed by the previous MDC-T dominated council.
