Famed producer and composer Lebo M is once again making waves, this time off the stage as reports emerge that he has severed ties with long-time associate Sibo Mhlungu amid swirling allegations of missing funds reportedly amounting to R10m.
Sources close to the celebrated Lion King creator say the split is part of a broader cleanup in his personal and professional life, with one insider claiming, “Lebo is cleaning house both in the bedroom and the boardroom.”
Reached for comment, Lebo M declined to address the allegations directly, referring TshisaLIVE to his publicist, Simphiwe Majola.
“Mr M’s lawyers and accountants are reviewing the matter thoroughly,” Majola said. “At this stage, he is focused on his upcoming Durban show and continuing to deliver world-class productions to his audiences. We will share further updates once all facts are established.”
However, Sibo hit back strongly, accusing Lebo M of orchestrating a “targeted smear and malice campaign” through his publicist.
“This orchestrated, targeted smear and malice campaign is funded by Lebo M and being carried out by his publicist Simphiwe Majola, whom you are well acquainted with,” said Sibo.
Simphiwe dismissed the claims as “unfounded and misleading”.
“We categorically reject and dismiss the unfounded allegation that Lebo M is behind any so-called smear or malice campaign,” he said. “Any attempt to frame this professional function as malicious is a deliberate misrepresentation. All defamatory and false allegations are duly noted and will be referred to.”
Despite the controversy, Lebo M remains focused on his work and legacy, with insiders suggesting this marks a renewed push to tighten operations and align with a more trustworthy inner circle.
Lebo M lawyer Brian K Msimeki from BK Msimeki Attorneys said: “Our client, Lebo M, categorically denies any involvement in the alleged publication circulated a few days ago regarding a purported fallout between himself and his former associate, Mr Sibo Mhlungu.
“From his legal representatives, and in the interest of setting the record straight, it is placed on record that there exists a reconciliation exceeding R25m, paid into Mr Mhlungu’s business and personal accounts.
“This reconciliation remains pending and will be finalised at all costs, without interference. While the process has experienced delays, these will be addressed at the appropriate time should it become necessary.
“Furthermore, our client confirms that his relationship with Mr Mhlungu and his company has been formally terminated.
“Please note: Any further enquiries should be directed to our client’s legal representatives.
“Their direct contact details will only be provided upon request.At present, Lebo M remains fully engaged in production commitments alongside his associates, with a dedicated focus on the tribute to Bab’ Joseph Shabalala.”
Sibo’s attorney Caleb McKellar said the allegation that his client “stole” or misappropriated R10m “is false, defamatory and wholly without factual basis”.
“These statements are currently the subject of urgent proceedings before the High Court of South Africa, Gauteng Division, Johannesburg: Sibongakonke Khayelihle Mhlungu & Independent Media Group Africa Talent Management (Pty) Ltd v Lebohang Morake & Till Dawn Entertainment (Pty) Ltd (case number to be allocated).
Our client will not litigate in the media.
“All substantiating documentation (reconciliations, invoices, handovers and correspondence) is before court. Our client was engaged as a service provider, delivering strategy, production and brand work on defined scopes.
“He and Media Group Africa Talent Management (Pty) Ltd rendered the services in full, and formal handovers were effected”, he said − Times.
