Freetown – Sierra Leone’s president has fired his vice president, who was kicked out of their political party earlier this month on accusations of fomenting violence and trying to form a new party. After the expulsion from the party Vice President Samuel Sam-Sumana fled his residence, saying he didn’t feel safe, and asked the US embassy for asylum. But earlier this week, he returned home.

Early yesterday President Ernest Bai Koroma announced that he was removing Sam-Sumana from office, citing the expulsion.

Koroma also said that by seeking asylum, Sam-Sumana showed a willingness to abandon his post.

Sierra Leone is battling an Ebola epidemic and several hot spots remain in the country. Sam-Sumana was under self-quarantine because one of his body guards had become ill. Sam-Sumana’s incubation period ended on Tuesday. – AP
