Up-and-coming young poet Kudakwashe Shoko looks forward to giving back to the community of Bulawayo with his charity Pukkalife Global Charity Foundation.

The organisation looks at helping orphans and widows. He said in the long run it would help many struggling people in society.

“I started a charity organisation by the name Pukkalife Global Charity Foundation and the organisation which aims at helping each and every struggling member of the society in any and every way possible. At the moment the organisation looks at helping orphans and widows,” he said.

The young artiste who draws inspiration from his mother who raised him has most of his poems talking about a mother’s love.

This also inspired the lad to do poetry about a mother’s love.

Shoko first wrote his poems when he was still in high school in 2017 about a heartbreak.

“In high school I kept up the spirit by writing life quotes at the back of my books. In 2017, that’s when I wrote my first poem about a heartbreak called Look at you. After that I came up with the name “The Poetry Battery” as my writing and stage name,” he said.

Explaining his stage name The Poetry Battery, he said he wants to be the battery that powers up poetry.

“I called myself ‘The Poetry Battery’ because in as much as it may sound like a trumpet is being blown, I want to be the battery that fuels the poetry circle. Shakespeare didn’t do it on his own and I cannot and will not do it on my own, I want to do the best I can in making poetry great again,” he said.

Writing gave the poet closure and consolation, he said, and he started releasing his poems on his blog and other writing platforms.

“I discovered that writing didn’t only give me pleasure, it gave me solace as it gives me the ability to create my own world, my utopian realm. I started publishing on the internet through my blog and started getting my audience and the support I got was overwhelming,” said Shoko.

Known for his poem Priya My Daughter which was one of his first publications he said he writes about the girl child as his mother is the centre of most of his poems.

“I draw inspiration from a number of subjects and the prime one is my mother, she raised me on her own and I feel it’s upon me to make her proud, that’s the greatest thank you I can give her. It’s what fuels me to always strive and give it my all when I set on anything as a contributing result, that’s why most of my poems are about her,” he said.

The poet also founded a poetry hub called Pukkalife Global Poets which aims at nurturing other poets.

“Through poetry I’m aiming at showing the masses that poetry isn’t dead, it’s still alive, up and running because nowadays it’s no longer getting the recognition, the reason I founded a poetry organisation by the name Pukkalife Global Poets is to help build and cultivate each other’s talent among the poets, looking forward to changing the game in poetry circles,” he said.
