Fairness Moyana in Hwange
SINOHYDRO, the operator of Hwange Power Station Units 7 and 8, has strengthened its community partnership through a significant donation of learning materials to Lwendulu Primary School.
The support is aimed at improving classroom delivery at one of Hwange’s oldest and best-performing schools.
This gesture comes as the energy company continues to play a central role in powering Zimbabwe’s economy, with the Units 7 and 8 expansion project now supplying over 50 percent of the country’s electricity demand.
Speaking during the recent handover ceremony, Mr Gu Jincheng, General Manager of the Sinohydro Hwange O\&M Project, said the company’s commitment to community development is anchored on its responsibility as a key national power producer.
“Education shapes the future, and we are proud to contribute to the growth of young minds in this community. These materials may seem small, but they represent our belief in the potential of every learner here at Lwendulu,” said Mr Gu.
He reiterated that since commissioning in 2023, Units 7 and 8 have generated more than 12.7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, strengthening Zimbabwe’s energy security and supporting social and economic progress.
The donation included whiteboards, markers, footballs, basketballs, stationery, school bags, and other learning essentials — resources expected to ease pressure on teachers and enhance the learning environment for more than 1 050 pupils.
HESCO Stakeholder Relations Officer, Mr Tafadzwa Zivengwa, praised the collaboration, describing it as an investment in the future of Hwange’s children.
“This donation will go a long way in empowering learners. We thank Sinohydro for continuing to stand with our communities,” he said.
HCCL Schools Administrator and Responsible Authority Representative, Miss Lackina Nyoni, said the materials would significantly improve learning outcomes.
“Your support strengthens our programmes and gives our learners the tools they need to succeed,” she said.
Accepting the donation, Lwendulu Primary School Head, Mrs Patience Sikale, said it had arrived at a critical time when the school required more teaching aids.
“This contribution will greatly assist our learners. It reflects true community partnership,” she said.
Quoting John Mbiti, she added: “I am because you are, therefore you are because I am,” highlighting the importance of collective support.
Meanwhile, Hwange Acting District Schools Inspector, Mr Lunguza Ndlovu, said the donation complements Government efforts to strengthen education under Vision 2030.
“This partnership with Sinohydro is commendable. We have seen their support before at Nechibondo Primary, and today’s gesture further strengthens quality education delivery,” he said.
Established in 1957, Lwendulu Primary School continues to be one of the district’s top-performing institutions, staffed by 39 educators and serving more than 1 056 learners.
The new resources are expected to enhance both instruction and learner participation. The handover ceremony ended in celebration, as learners and community members expressed appreciation through song and dance.
