GOVERNMENT, in partnership with the Lotteries and Gaming Fund, is accelerating the construction of primary schools in rural areas across the country, Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ambassador Cain Mathema has said.
He was speaking during the commissioning of a block of four classrooms at Matoranjera Primary School and a block of two classrooms at Biri Primary School in Makonde District on Monday.
“The situation at Biri Primary School has been dire as pupils were learning in dilapidated tobacco barns that had been converted into makeshift classrooms as a temporary measure.
“Accordingly, Government through fund partially alleviated the predicament by financing a two classroom block that was commissioned on October 30, 2015 but was not enough to accommodate all the pupils thus warranting the construction of another classroom block that is now ready for commissioning,” he said
Minister Mathema said in respect of Matoranjera Primary School the classrooms had outlived their lifespan hence warranted the construction of the four classroom block by Government through the fund.
“The forthright governmental initiative of the construction of modern classroom blocks in rural areas matching those in towns and cities has taken momentum just like the two classroom block and semi-detached teachers quarters that was financed by Government through the LGF that I commissioned at St David’s Nyandoro Primary School, Mashonaland East, on Wednesday last week, so the crusade is ongoing.
“The Lotteries and Gaming Fund Act [Chapter 10:26] under my Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage and is spearheading subventions for infrastructure at schools especially in rural communities that cannot afford the construction of classroom blocks by their own means.
“My repetitive appeal to fellow Zimbabweans is to look back at the schools that nurtured them and contribute to their sustainability remembering that you are what you are today because of former schools invested in you through the selflessness of others,” he said.
