In the past the Wayne Brandt-led league had 15 teams but the number has shot up following the arrival of Zimbabwe School of Mines, who registered two teams, Delta, Zimbabwe Saints, How Mine, who also registered a second team and Maison Nic, made up of mainly former Archers players.
“As leaders we are so excited by the increase in the number of teams in our league and as I speak to you right now I am drafting a 21-team fixtures programme,” said the association’s organising secretary, Lethukuthula Nkomo.
Nkomo said the increase in number showed confidence in the way the league was being run and that on its own should be able to cascade to the corporate world.
“We are busy looking for sponsors for our league and I am quite positive that maximum mileage will be received as the sport is surely growing in Bulawayo,” said Nkomo.
Previously the sport had been seen as a pub sport, played only by boozers and as such some people lacked interest in taking up the sport.
Last year, efforts by National Darts Association of Zimbabwe (Ndaz) to have more juniors taking up the sport saw the National Association of Secondary Heads (Nash) officially introducing the sport in schools.
