FIVE people from Hwange were arrested last week after they were found in possession of 10 ivory chips in their car.
Patrick Mupande (37) of Lwendulu Village in Hwange, Lovemore Shoko (32) from Gamba 1 Village under Chief Nakatambe, Shine Sibanda (49) from Lwendulu Village, Mandla Shoko (28) from Gamba 1 Village, Rodrick Muleya (41) from Lwendulu Village were arrested by the police after they were found with 10 ivory chips in a Mazda 323.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo confirmed the arrest and said the five were arrested after a joint effort between the National Parks, Zimbabwe Republic Police — Mineral and Border Control Unit (MBCU) and the Support Unit.
“We arrested six people who were found with 10 ivory chips, the arrest was a joint effort between National Parks, MBCU and Support Unit with a mandate of enforcing law and curtail outflow of minerals and other natural resources.
“The message is clear, national parks are no go areas, anyone found in illegal possession of such things, the law will deal with them,” he said.
The five on Friday appeared before Hwange provincial magistrate Mrs Rose Dube.
They were remanded in custody to 21 June for trial.
