SIX teams are set to face-off in the third edition of the Matabeleland Rugby Football Board (MRFB) Sevens tournament that starts at Hartsfield grounds tomorrow.

The competition, to be played in a round robin format, will see defending champions Platinum Warriors taking on Matabeleland Warriors, while Highlanders will play against 2015 champions Old Miltonians. Bulldogs tackle Nust in the first round of matches.

Tournament Winners will walk away with a floating shield sponsored by Unforgettable, rugby balls and training equipment.

MRFB competition fixtures committee chairperson Simba Dangah said this year’s tournament will run for five weeks, with the eventual annual winner being crowned on the final day.

“This is a competition organised by the MRFB to complement efforts of the Zimbabwe Sevens. The idea is to end the year with a tournament to keep our players active as we prepare for the Sevens Rugby World Cup next year.

“The Cheetahs’ head coach will also be present to scout for talent since he has indicated that the door is open for anyone that impresses,” said Dangah.

Zimbabwe qualified for their third successive Sevens World Cup despite suffering a last gasp 7-10 loss to Uganda in the Rugby Africa Sevens final in Kampala, Uganda, last month.

The Cheetahs also secured a place at next year’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series core status qualifier at the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens.

After the sevens tournament, Dangah said the board would host a MRFB awards ceremony at a venue yet to be announced. — @khumzallen.
