GRASSROOTS Soccer communications officer Nompumelelo Bhebhe has hailed the impact of the just ended Skillz Holiday Camp on the life of the youth and the growth of soccer in the country.
The week-long camp started on Monday and came to an end on Saturday, with over 500 participants attending.
“We expected to have 500 participants 250 girls and 250 boys but the number exceeded what we expected which is a great positive, it shows that the youths are standing up in shaping their future,” she said.
The camp did not just seek to educate on soccer but went a step further in training the youth in issues to do with HIV and Aids, voluntary male circumcision and drug abuse.
According to Bhebhe the camp was a huge success and the impact of the course was already showing on the participants.
“The goal is to have a generation that is well versed in the department of life skills, and with the reception that we got from the participants the future is bright for Zimbabwe.
“One of the participants (name withheld), has expressed how the programme has made her realise that a person living with HIV is no different from those who are HIV negative,” she said.
Players were trained in basic soccer skills under the watchful eyes of legends that included Johanes Ngodzo, Nomsa Moyo and Chipo Tsodzo.
Grassroots Soccer partnered with BancABC together with the Ministry of Youth,Indegenisation and Economic Empowerment to make the camp a success.
