POLICE have arrested 7 018 suspected housebreakers and recovered property worth over US$3,3 million countrywide over the last 10 months using sniffer dogs to track down criminals, Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri has said. In a speech read on his behalf by Commissioner Nonkosi Ncube at the 2013 Police Dogs Championships, Comm-Gen Chihuri said the dogs and their handlers have enhanced police efforts in tracking down criminals. Last year police arrested 6 587 suspects and recovered property worth over US$325 000 over the same period.
“The contribution of the Canine Unit as a complementary policing arm of the organisation cannot be over-emphasised,” Comm Gen Chihuri said.
“This can be seen in the remarkable work done by the Canine Section in tracking down criminals and recovering property.”
“Criminals who would want to fight the police handler and his dog are doing so at their own peril. They will surely be accounted for, crime does not pay,” he said.
Comm Gen Chihuri commended female members for taking up the profession of dog handling, a field previously dominated by men.
“By taking up dog handling, our female officers are disarming the age-old misconceptions of male chauvinism,” he said.
“I have no doubt that our female officers are opening the way and serving as an inspiration to others to also take up the challenge as dog handlers.”
