SOCIAL media influencer and content creator Sipho Mercent Nyathi is set to make his acting debut in the locally produced film Sizolobola, which premieres on Saturday at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.
The premiere will begin with a red carpet experience at 6pm, followed by the screening of the film at 8pm. Shot in and around Bulawayo and Seke district, Mashonaland East, the production boasts a star-studded cast featuring legendary actress Jesesi Mungoshi, best known for her lead role in the 1991 film Neria among other films. She was married to the late renowned author Charles Mungoshi. It also features popular socialite and actress Madam Boss (Tyra Chikocho), Exult Ncube, Charles Muzembi, social media sensation Sipho Mercent Nyathi, award-winning poet and actress Sithandazile Dube and versatile artiste Madlela Skhobokhobo.
The technical team includes Praise Zizo Nkala as director of photography, Jerald on sound, while the film was edited by Zizo and Joe Njagu.
Nyathi takes on the role of Sibusiso, marking a new chapter in his growing career in the creative industry. Speaking about his debut, Nyathi said landing the role was a rewarding experience that challenged him to explore a different side of his talent.
“I auditioned for the role and, in bringing the character to life, I received invaluable guidance from the directors, Manuel Matsinye and Mothusi Ndlovu (Madlela). At the same time, I also drew from my own personality to connect with the character.
“I’d never acted before, but I believe my experience in digital content creation helped me adapt quickly. Content creation is something I love; it’s part of who I am and I believe it is my calling.
“I hope this is just the beginning. I would love to feature in more films and continue creating engaging online content,” said Nyathi.
The film’s premiere is expected to bring together film enthusiasts, creatives and supporters of local productions as Sizolobola makes its official debut. – Follow on X: @mthabisi_mthire
