SINCE time immemorial social soccer was known as a platform for players who had reached their sell by date in competitive football, to keep themselves fit, make acquaintances, whiling up time over booze and braai, with no losers or winners.
However, nowadays it seems there is nothing SOCIAL about social soccer as that noble pastime has been turned into competitive league, where one should win at all cost.
Last Sunday referee Nkosikhona Kanye was forced to call off a Bulawayo Social Soccer League match pitting Fireworks from Cowdray Park and Entumbane Bombers. With the match deadlocked at nil-all Fireworks were awarded what looked like a genuine penalty, this did not go well with Bombers players who walked off the pitch straight into their waiting minibus before driving off.
