FOR those who have followed the game of football for some time now, names such as Evans Gwekwerere, Zondai Nyaungwa, Dumisani ‘Commando’ Mpofu and Ocean ‘Gungwa’ Mushure are, not only just familiar, but popular.
It is this cast of yesteryear stars that will troop into Chisamba Grounds in Sakubva, Mutare tomorrow (Saturday) for a potentially explosive social soccer encounter pitting Mutare most popular social soccer outfit, Socco Golden Stars up against PanJap Motors FC.
The match starts at 1pm.
Just like the hosts – Socco Golden Stars – who are made up of players who used to don Premier Soccer League and Division One League club jerseys, the Harare-based visitors, PanJap Motors FC players have played at the highest level of the game on the domestic scene during their hey days.
Socco Golden Stars administrator, Tatenda ‘Gede’ Matiringe, confirmed the duel, saying the event presents a family time out and networking platform.
“The matches between the two teams have been exciting on and off the field of play. The two teams have drawn large crowds, more than some competitive league teams, and we have every reason to believe that this time around will be no different.
“We are inviting all those who love the game of football to come and watch their yesteryear stars in action at Chisamba Grounds on Saturday. Apart from it being social soccer, people must also be aware that the event presents a family time out and networking platform,” he said.
His opposite number, Zondai Nyaungwa, who earned his stripes during his playing days as a Dynamos goalkeeper, said all the well-known yesteryear stars who turn out for his club will be coming to Mutare for the match.
“We are excited to announce that this time around it will be a full house, with all our players present. They are too many to mention by name, but what we all know is that PanJap Motors FC is full of players who used to be celebrated during their playing days.
“It is surprising to note that some of the players have actually improved with age even though endurance could now be a challenge for them. Therefore, this promises to be an exciting encounter against Socco Golden Stars,” he said
