Have you ever felt overwhelmed, lost interest in something that you once loved doing or just felt like doing nothing at all? Then you began to ask yourself if what you thought you wanted to achieve when you embarked on that project is worth it at all . . . if you are the right person to do that anyway . . . and what would happen if you quit. No one would die, right? It’s not exactly a life or death situation. If you are anything like me you would agree with me that there were times when you felt this way or worse. There are those days when you felt you did not want to do anything at all, you were demotivated and felt bothered for no apparent reason.
You wished your life was much simpler and you didn’t have much going on. You just want to stay in bed and do nothing, well, anything that’s not the project you are evading/ avoiding. We all know that those voices in our head telling us all that were not exactly doing us a favour. I’m even ashamed to admit that I thought those thoughts and even planned to sabotage myself and felt okay about that then.
Here are some ways to avoid quitting.
Decide not to quit
In reality all those “voices” are just your mind trying to convince you that the world won’t end if you sabotage yourself. We also know that the same mind can be changed to your advantage because it’s the same one that saw it fit for you to embark on that project in the first place.
It sounds like it is easier said than done, but just make a decision not to quit and stick to it. Once you adopt that mindset to soldier on, you have a good foundation. Sure, there will be tough days but when you know that these are just trials in your path you will find a way around them rather than view them as mountains that you can’t conquer.
Watch someone else win
Let’s face it, when your life isn’t going well you get irritated by people who are doing well because they make you feel like a failure. Look at it from a different perspective. If that person is winning in whatever they are doing, shouldn’t that give you hope that you can win too, in your own endeavors. What does that person have that you do not have?
You might say you have differences, so why don’t you find out what those differences are and also make an effort to learn one or two things from them.
By celebrating the people who are winning, you are setting yourself on the right path to succeed and once you are confident that you will, your mind will generate ideas that will sure push you to try one or two things and as you start moving chances are that you will achieve something that will prop you further.
Counselling
A lot of us think counselling is for people who are not well mentally. We have painted counselling in a bad light, as a service that people do not necessarily need unless they are “mentally sick”. Has anyone ever thought that counselling is just getting advice from a professional that they may not have otherwise gotten from a colleague or elder? Sometimes we just need someone to assure us that things will be well, even if all they have to do is say it.
Back to basics
Go back to why you started the project, business or programme that you are considering quitting and think thoroughly about that. The reasons are still there. The only difference may be that you have lost the mojo for it and you need to remind yourself that it is worth it to pursue it.
Many ways of killing a cat
So things did not work out because you handled things a certain way or maybe you are just bored in the project. How about you rev things up by changing your modus operandi or try to make it fun so that you enjoy even the boring part of the job. Bring out your creativity and find other ways of doing what you do. Still thinking of quitting? I don’t think so.
Develop good habits
Dark days are sure to come but when you develop habits that keep you in the game, you needn’t worry about being affected by those. These should be daily habits that will propel you to success without you feeling like you are working at all. The great thing about habits is that once the system absorbs them you won’t need to do much as the body will be running on autopilot.
Some of the habits one can develop are; challenging oneself to do hard things more frequently, measuring success in terms of happiness rather than wealth, time management, keeping commitments, overcoming fear, making sacrifices and moving a single step towards one’s desired goal each day, no matter how small the step is.
